GEORGE W. BUSH MERITA UN NOBEL PER LA PACE

Luglio 2008 (IPS) - Il prossimo Premio Nobel per la Pace dovrebbe essere assegnato a George W. Bush, scrive Roberto Savio, fondatore e presidente emerito della IPS.

In solo otto anni, il presidente degli Stati Uniti Bush è riuscito a cambiare profondamente la sua nazione e il mondo intero. Ho dei dubbi a riguardo del fatto se, come presidente, Barack Obama sarà capace di motivare i suoi per la formazione di un'opposizione così vasta come quella del World Social Forum a Porto Alegre. Il clamore di centinaia di persone contro l'imperialismo e per un mondo diverso è stato il risultato della radicalizzazione prodotta in questo periodo. Senza questa, la creazione della società civile globale sarebbe stata molto pià lenta.

Il primo e principale contributo da parte di Bush fu la dimostrazione che l'unilateralismo non può più funzionare in un mondo che è sempre più multipolare. Lui ha definitivamente confutato la teoria secondo la quale la guerra può risolvere i conflitti e dimostra che non ci può essere consenso da parte di una nazione senza il rispetto dei trattati internazionali (a partire da quello di Kyoto) ciò ha creato una crescente irritazione e come conseguenza il trattato contro le bombe a grappoolo è stato ratificati quasi in ogni nazione della terra.

JULY 2008 (IPS) - The next Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded to George W. Bush, writes Roberto Savio, founder and president emeritus of IPS.

In just eight years, U.S. president Bush has managed to profoundly change his country and the world. I doubt that as president Barack Obama would be able to motivate the formation of an opposition as vast as that of the World Social Forum at Porto Alegre. The clamour of hundreds of thousands of people against imperialism and for a different world was the result of the radicalisation produced in this period. Without it, the creation of a global civil society would have been far slower.

The first major contribution of Bush was to demonstrate that unilateralism can no longer work in a world that is increasingly multipolar. He definitively disproved the theory that war can resolve conflict and demonstrated that there can be no consensus to govern without respect for international law. The failure to ratify a single international treaty (starting with Kyoto) has aroused growing irritation and as a consequence the treaty against cluster bombs has been ratified by almost every country on earth.
